Zip Code Search

Zip Code Search was created by moorejf
I downloaded and installed version 2.2 of Store Locator for Joomla 3.2.4.

If I search for a zip code that is not within the set radius then it comes back with suggestions from all over the world -- even if I have limited the category to North America. I tried setting the Regional Bias to US but that still returns suggestions for <strong>address numbers that match the zip code</strong>, not zip codes. The search area says "City, State or Zip Code" yet the search returns are linked to addresses -- that doesn't make sense.

Can I change the search criteria at the top to just "City or State"?

Can I turn off the suggestions?

Also, I keep seeing documentation referenced in the forum but I don't see anywhere to download it. Can you give me a link to the documentation?

Thanks

You can modify all the text in the component front-end via the language files or using language overrides.

You can also disable suggestions via the options. These suggestions come from Google and are what Google believes are best guess suggestions for your search query.

Im not sure what you mean by search results are linked to the address.

Our system is coordinate based. That was the design and purpose of our system. All locations are translated into Latitude and Longitude. Your search query is also translated to a coordinate position. Then, locations are returned that appear within the radius from your searched position.

The beauty of our system is that you can type in anything that Google can understand and translate it into a location. So while you can search by zip code, you are not limited to this. You could even search by names of a location. For instance you could search for locations near "JFK International Airport" by using that as the query.

The Problem Is That Even If I Put A ZIP Code That's On My Country Google Suggest ZIP Codes Of Others Countries... Even If I've Set Country Bias To My Specific Country...

...But Maybe I've Not Understand Correctly...

====[ A PRATICAL EXAMPLE ===========================================================

How I Can Achieve This?

I've The Latest 1.8.2 Version For Joomla 2.5...

If I Input A ZIP Code In Address Field... For Example 10345 And There Is No Zip Code On
My Database But I've 10346 And 10344 ...It's Possible To Display That "near" Places As
Suggested Places Without Using Google Suggest? But Only Looking At The Radius Range?...

My Costumer Want To Display The Nearest ZIP Code If Nothing Found...

Thanks In Advance...

I have a listing in my database for a location with the zip code "58072". When I put "58073" into the search area I get back a listing of suggestions that are all over the world, including any that have an address with 58073 in it (not the zip code, the address). If I put in "Kansas" or "KS" as the search term it comes back with no results even though I have a listing in Kansas. Same thing for Maine and other states. The only time it finds a listing is if I type in the exact city and state or the exact zip code.

If it is working the way it is supposed to then it isn't very intuitive. It's too bad because I like the look of the extension but it isn't giving my customer what she wants.

supermega - Sorry we dont have that ability at the current time... Zip codes are not necessarily adjacent, so thats a rather complex issue to solve.

Moorejf - You'll need to provide more spcific search areas or increase the radius of your search. By searching "Maine" or "Kansas" it searches from the geographical center of the stat up to your radius. Searching for something like 'South Portland, Maine' with a standard radius would be more useful and would show results in a closer area. Also, customers can enter in their entire address or zip code to get results near them.

Regarding Google suggestions, that's a different issue and a good point, which we can look into regionalizing in our next release.

Okay, if searching for city, state would give me better returns, how can I modify the search field so it says "Please enter your city, state" rather than what is in it now - "City, State or Zip Code".

You can easily edit that in the language file located in: languages/en-GB/en-GB.com_storelocator.ini
